The Defund Muskegon Police Department team believes that a just world is possible. We can, and we will, live in a world that is focused on centering justice and equity within all of our systems. While our current leaders and systems have failed us as residents and neighbors of Muskegon, we acknowledge that there are solutions to the over policing and thus subjugation of Black and brown individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, poor folks, and many other marginalized communities. The Defund Muskegon PD campaign was born out of the need to challenge these failures of an over-funded and inherently racist policing system. This system in the United States has killed Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, and countless other marginalized folks-- specifically Black individuals.
The Defund Muskegon PD campaign, as well as our whole team, is dedicated to the reality that absolutely no one is free until we are all free. With that being said, we are committed to the following tenants through both action and thought: being actively anti-racist, Pro-BIPoC, pro-Queer, pro-Womxn, anti-capitalist, anti-classist, anti-carceral as well as to be dedicated our collective fight for the full equality of those with disabilities. We understand that this is a collective struggle, where we are all actively fighting for our livelihoods.
We, as the Defund Muskegon PD team, believe that to successfully rebuild our city, we must be cautious of our police force. In the United States, we have seen way too many violent acts by the hands of law enforcement officers, and we commit to eradicating this reality. Defunding the Muskegon police department will allow for financial and emotional support to be given to Muskegon residents by the city’s systems and structures due to a freeing up of funds and personnel. This funding that is freed from the hands of the police department will be invested into services that proactively address these supposed “crimes,” or as we would put it, “systemic failures.” With divesting from our police force, we will see funding be reallocated to our schools, infrastructure, public health services, and other social services properly funded. We, too, wish to acknowledge that defunding the police force is only one step in the path to the complete abolition of the police and prison industrial complex.
The Defund Muskegon PD team wishes to reiterate that we believe a just world is possible. We ask that you join us in our efforts to bring a focus back to justice and equity in the City of Muskegon.
